National Grid sparked the interest of Year 4 pupils at Stifford Clays Primary School yesterday when they went in to teach a workshop on gas and electricity.

90 pupils learned about how the gasholders used to supply energy to the local community.

With work going on to dismantle three gasholders on the site at London Road, Grays, the workshops are part of a push by National Grid to reach out to schools.

The gas-work is expected to be completed by spring 2015 and will leave the site open to re-development.

Cathy Hasler, Year 4 teacher at Stifford Clays Primary School, said, “It was a fantastic visit and the Year 4 pupils loved learning more about energy and asking the engineers about the work they did.”

Keith Johnston, National Grid’s Land Regeneration Manager, said “We were thrilled to visit Stifford Clays.

“National Grid is always keen to have a positive impact on the communities in which we work and what better way than to get local schoolchildren excited about science.”

National Grid is carrying out similar projects at its former gasworks sites across the country.
