THERESA May failed to disappoint in the footwear department today when she strutted around Canvey in a pair of knee-length leopard skin boots.

The Home Secretary, who is known for an unapologetic love of shoes, was visiting the island in the suede boots to meet shop owner Harry Awidikian and his staff at Gold and Diamonds, a jewellery shop in Furtherwick Road.

The store was robbed by a man armed with a machete last month.

The Tory secretary of state is famed for her extravagant shoes and boots worn even on official outings, describing them as an "icebreaker".

Some of her more recent fashion statements have included combining shiny thigh-length boots with a bright red and gold coat to meet the Queen.

Last month a mystery Conservative supporter paid £17,500 to win a shoe shopping spree with Mrs May.

The visit to Canvey with incumbent MP Rebecca Harris followed a morning stop on a battle bus in Grays town centre with Jackie Doyle-Price.
