Firefighters helped rescue a man in his 60s who had become trapped on a conservatory roof while cleaning gutters at his home.

Crews from Basildon attended an address in Markhams Chase, Laindon, at about 6.30pm today.

The man had fallen about ten feet, knocked his head on a flat roof, and was unable to get down.

After firefighters moved the man to safety, he was left in the care of the ambulance service.

An ambulance spokeswoman said: "We sent an ambulance crew and officer to the scene.

"The man suffered serious head injuries, but are not lifethreatening. He was sent to Basildon Hospital for further care."
