A REVAMP of the area outside the newly-refurbished Trafford House flats block has been given the go-ahead.

Plans to create a community square and promenade outside the former Ford headquarters, in Cherrydown East, Basildon, and replace an existing subway with a Puffin crossing, have been approved by the council's planning committee at a meeting yesterday evening.

The proposals, put forward by Basildon Properties, are part of a bid to improve pedestrian access and curb antisocial behaviour around the building, which is being converted into 384 flats.

The subway linking Cherrydown East with Waldegrave will be filled in and a Puffin crossing built close to the Station Way junction.

Following site visits some amendments were made to the original designs, which will now allow two extra taxis to stand at the taxi rank, benefiting commuters and easing traffic flow.

Stephen Hillier, chairman of the council’s planning committee, says the plans will play a key part in the town’s ongoing rgeneration.

He said: “This upgrade to the public realm, associated with the upgrade of Trafford House will enhance the appearance and first impressions of the town as a destination for people arriving at Basildon.

“It will also form a key to the revival of Basildon town centre, with a much more attractive layout that will help to reignite the night-time economy. This will support the council’s aspirations to revive and regenerate Basildon town centre, create jobs and improve living space for the people of Basildon.”
