A drunk man who took a night out a bit too far when he stripped naked and started damaging cars on Southend seafront has been ordered to abide by an night-time curfew.

Tom O’Neill, 32, of no fixed address, was charged after a number of videos of him started circulating on social media following the rather bizarre incident at about 12.40am on Friday, January 8.

One of the videos, posted with the caption “So this happened down Southend seafront tonight... An extremely drunk Irish fella stark, butt naked trying to fight oncoming cars!”, shows him running towards cars in the middle of the road, surrounded by discarded clothes.

At first, the footage, which racked up more than 7,000 views, shows that motorists seem hesitant to get past him as he squares up to the cars with his fists clenched.

After a few minutes, two cars manage to creep by using a shared space area for pedestrians, before he takes a swing at one of them.

PC Mick Finch, and police dog Cody, were swiftly called to Marine Parade to deal with him and make an arrest.

Magistrates at Southend sentenced him to a combination order this week, in which he has to abide by an 8pm to 7am curfew for a month.

He was charged with criminal damage to a vehicle, being drunk and disorderly as well as assaulting a police officer. He admitted all three charges.

He was also ordered to pay £300 compensation - he did not have to pay any costs or a victim surcharge.

A spokesman for the Crown Prosecution Service said: “The compensation goes to a taxi operator who tried to pass him and as he did, O’Neill punched the headlight causing the headlight lens to break.

“When he was arrested there was a paramedic and a police officer who was trying to assist him and he kicked out, kicking the officer in the side of the chest.”
