GLOUCESTER Park was turned pink as the annual Basildon Race for Life run got under way.

About 2,000 women dressed in their best pink tutus, fairy wings and face paint took part in the 5km runs to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Gill Burgess, Cancer Research UK event manager, said: “Once again Basildon has stood up in fine support of Race for Life.

“It’s always an amazing atmosphere and the Basildon event this year certainly didn’t disappoint. It was brilliant, there were lots of high spirits and lots of emotion.”

It is hoped the event will raise about £160,000 for the charity.

Gill added: “It’s always a rollercoaster of emotions, its such a day of celebration and hope but nearly everyone sheds a tear at some point.

“But I think that’s what unites everyone and makes them more determined to keep fundraising.”
