A POPULAR Canvey man who spent five weeks in an induced coma after being found unconscious has been discharged from hospital.

Daniel Holliday, 34, has made good progress in Southend Hospital and has now been allowed home.

Mystery still surrounds how the “gentle giant” came to be found unconscious at the back of Bar One, in Long Road, Canvey.

Mr Holliday thanked everyone for their support and kind wishes while he was in hospital.

His dad, Bob, 58, of Beresford Court, Billericay, echoed his sentiment.

He said: “The support has been fantastic from people.

“He is at his mum’s at the moment on Canvey.

“He still has a lot of work to do and a lot of physiotherapy is needed but he is getting there.

“However, he is eating and breathing normally now and is eating proper food which is a lot better than the hospital food.

“He can walk but he does get out of breath a bit.

“It is such a relief that he is home.”

Mr Holliday, of Brindles, Canvey, was rushed to Southend Hospital after being discovered by a cleaner on October 16 at the car park at the back of Bar One.

The former Castle View School pupil had swallowed his own vomit and the acid had burnt his lungs.

Paramedics arrived just in time to take him to hospital.

After undergoing surgery, he was transferred to the Papworth Hospital, in Cambridge, for specialist treatment.

The Chelsea fan returned to Southend earlier this month to be closer to his loved ones and woke up from his induced coma last week.

His family have been trying to find out what happened to Mr Holliday since he was found.

He has no recollection of the incident, although he keeps having flash backs.

A fundraising page was set up by his stepsister Clare Ahrens to raise a birthday collection for him, who turned 34 while in a coma.

It raised £250, with donations flooding in for the popular Canvey man.

Anyone with information about the incident can call PC Louise Edwards at Rayleigh Police Station on 101.
