AN UNEXPLOADED 50kg Second World War bomb that was found in the River Thames was removed and exploded.

The event was carried out by the Royal Navy and Metropolitan Police and it shut down various central London areas.

It is understood that the bomb had been towed along the river to Tilbury, Essex, where it was safely destroyed.

Police had been called to the river at 17:15 yesterday.

The device was been identified as a German SD 50kg bomb, a small armour-piercing ordinance dropped from an aircraft.

It is understood that the device measured 2ft by 1ft (60cm x 30cm).
