CONCERN about safety in Grays High Street is nothing new.

Yes, police resources are stretched. Yes, a lot of the incidents are not deemed as “serious” in the bigger crime picture. But still. No, they are not acceptable.

It is this supposedly “low-level” antisocial behaviour which, if left, eats away at the fabric of a place. And examples are happening too often in Grays town centre.

Today residents highlight in this paper a genuine concern with drinkers who sit around, particularly during the hot summer’s days, and do just that - drink.

The fact is their presence intimidates families and shoppers who walk past going about their daily business. Then, as the drink kicks in, they can become rowdier, louder and occasionally aggressive. And that’s not a good image for any high street.

Grays High Street needs to thrive.

These so-called minor examples of antisocial behaviour mustn’t be allowed to fester, they need to be stopped.

Thurrock Council must continue to work closely with its partners and do what’s necessary to curb the issues. It’s important for the community, business and the future of the town.
