THE tall sailing ship Mercedes made its return to Southend Pier.

Visitors climbed aboard the ship for a luxurious cruise along the Thames Estuary, during which they learnt all about nautical life.

Everyone’s favourite pirate, Jack Sparrow, even made an appearance.

Ann Holland, councillor for Culture, tourism and economy, said: “The Mercedes visits various beautiful locations across the European coast and it is a joy to once again welcome the Mercedes and her crew to Southend.

“It’s wonderful to see the ships coming into Southend. I have been on the Mercedes myself. It’s a lovely ship and it’s a delight to take a trip around the pier.”

The Mercedes first sailed in May 2005 and each year it attracts a large turnout. It has a lounge, bar and restaurant inside.

Amongst the international fleet of tall ships, the Mercedes is one of the youngest members.

When she is not sailing in Southend or cruising along Europe, she takes part in the Tall Ship Experience - setting off to the tropical Caribbean waters during the winter.

Members of the public who were not able to secure tickets for the Estuary cruises, which took place on Friday and Saturday, were still able to admire the exterior of the ship as it docked at the end of the pier.

Havens Hospices hosted a collection - bringing along Jack Sparrow and his friends.
