A PIE and mash shop is relocating in Basildon town centre.

Robins Pie and Mash has been granted planning permission by Basildon Council to open at 98 Town Square, Basildon.

The building is currently vacant, after former card and gift store Pound Party closed down.

The pie and mash shop is currently open in Market Square.

However, the proposal seeks to move it to a more prominent location within the Town Square to encourage more custom.

The shop will employ three full-time and six part-time members of staff.

It will be open from 11am until 7pm Monday to Saturday and noon until 6pm on Sundays.

Planning documents read: “It is envisaged that outdoor seating will be provided to the front of the property and this is a common feature in the immediate area.

“It is considered that the proposed use of 98 Town Square as a restaurant with takeaway is appropriate at this location.

“The proposed use is compliant with the relevant Basildon Local Plan Policies.

“The change of use would not adversely affect the amenity of neighbouring occupiers and will support existing food outlets by making East Walk a food destination.”

Basildon Council officers approved the application yesterday.

The report reads: “It is therefore considered that the use could result in greater number of shoppers visiting this part of the Town Square than the intermittent retail uses that have used this unit recently, as well as bringing the unit back into a permanent use, helping to add vitality and vibrancy of this area of the Town Centre.

“Overall, the proposed use is considered to be in keeping with the range of uses that are appropriate for a town centre.

“It will not seriously impact on the amenities of adjoining occupiers, whilst adding vitality to the parade, provide a service to customers, with the alteration to the rear having minimal impact on the visual amenities of this area.”

Robins Pie and Mash, a family run chain established in 1929, has several other branches throughout Essex and east London.
