Many fascinating people use the Plates with Mates service, all who have long and eventful lives.

Although, there is only one woman lived in Nazi-run Germany during the Second World War.

Helene Cunningham, now 96, lived in Cologne at the beginning of the war.

Speaking about the beginning of the war, Helene said: "I think it was very much like it was here in England from what I have gathered here.

"All the boys had to go and fight for the Fatherland like the boys fought for their country here in England."

Helene later moved to Salzgitter in 1942.

Towards the end of the war, Germany became vulnerable as Russia came in from the East, the USA came in from the West and the UK came in from the North.

Russian troops marched into Salzgitter and Helene was forced to flee them.

She said: "I had a bit of a fright when the troops came in - we already knew the war had finished.

"We ran into the bunkers down a long flight of stairs and hid from them.

"Luckily, the American troops came and stopped the Russians when they were only 10 miles away from where I was."

After the war ended, Helene moved to UK where she married a man named Anthony Cunningham - a British solider - who she has two children with.

She also has a daughter from a previous marriage.

Helene now uses the Plates with Mates service, saying: "Us old people need organising as we struggle to do a lot of thing by ourselves."
