A consultation on its proposed development on the former Tilbury coal-fired power station site has been announced.

The consultation period will run from February 26 to March 26, 2018.
As part of the plans, RWE is proposing to revive the Tilbury site with a new gas-fired plant.

The Tilbury Energy Centre would use highly efficient Combined Cycle Gas Turbine technology to generate low-carbon electricity for approximately three million homes.

The project also includes a 299MW peaking plant to respond rapidly to fluctuations in demand and an energy storage facility.

The project will employ 1500 people during construction and will provide up to 100 highly-skilled jobs during operation.

Severine Poncelet, Tilbury Energy Centre Project Director commented: “We believe that Tilbury is an excellent site for future power generation because of its location.

“The site benefits from existing infrastructure including access to the National Grid and gas systems.

“It has direct access to cooling water from the River Thames and excellent road, river and sea transport connections.

“As proposals for the Tilbury Energy Centre evolve, the project team is committed to keeping the local community informed.”

This is the first step in the planning process and the first of two opportunities for people to have their say before plans are submitted to the Planning Inspectorate.

RWE is hosting three events for people to speak to the project team.
They are on February 28 at the Tilbury Hub, March 5 at West Tilbury Village Hall, and March 6 at Gravesend Old Town Hall.
