HARWICH Boxing Club’s John Wheatley has won an Essex title.
He was looking to improve on last year’s runner-up place, in the Essex Senior Amateur Boxing Association elite final at Harlow.
And he proved good value for his unanimous points decision, against Brentwood’s Adrian Martin.
Wheatley and Martin did battle in the 69kg welterweight division.
Martin seized the initiative in the first round, showing a higher work-rate.
However, Wheatley responded well, picking up the pace in the second to draw level and leave the bout finely poised.
With momentum in his favour, Wheatley smashed his way through the final round, forcing a standing-eight count after a thunderous attack left his opponent in trouble.
He gained a unanimous points decision and his success was just reward for his dedication and commitment.
