HARWICH and Dovercourt Golf Club played the second part of their bi-annual match against Felixstowe.

They had triumphed in the home contest and went on to win away, too, 4½-2½.

They therefore won the much-coveted silver salver and Felixstowe captain Brian Kemp presented it to Harwich counterpart Rod Osborne.

Harwich’s Mail on Sunday team travelled to the Shire London Club, in Barnet, on a torrential Bank Holiday Monday to play in the last 16.

They suffered defeat but put up a good fight, with Eric Bushell winning on the last green, Nick Rate only losing on the last hole and John Oakley defeated 2/1.

Many thanks must go to the rest of the team, including Mark Gillett, John Stace and Tom Neale for their brilliant effort of getting into the last 16 of a 4,000-club entry.

Thanks also to the club bursary for its help and support.

It is hoped the club will encourage the team to compete again next year, having got so close to that elusive expenses-paid week in Spain.
