DUCKPOND 2

SUNDAY SHRIMPERS 3

(After extra-time)

John Fowler Memorial Cup semi-final

THIS was a tremendous cup tie between neighbours playing each other for the first time.

The match was played in a good spirit, with no quarter asked or given, played out in front of a good-size crowd at Shrub End.

The Shrimpers took the lead midway through the first half, after a foul in the area by Garth Charleson on Mark Palmer.

Jake Kioussis made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Duckpond were soon on terms when Matt Geen broke away and his shot was too hot to handle for keeper Sam Jewell.

He dribbled through the defence before firing home from close range, to even the score at the break.

Jewell and his opposite number, Sam Felgate, went on to have good games and, with the scores level in the second half, the action continued to be fast and furious.

Shrimpers put the Duckpond defence under pressure from corners and crosses and Lewis Wood converted to give them the lead, forcing the ball home after a goalmouth scramble.

Then, in the last second of normal time, Liam Duly scored with a free-kick into the roof of the net to take the game to extra-time.

In the second period, Wood scored the winner from Jordan Heath’s cross, pouncing after a good save from Felgate.

Both teams had given everything in their quest for local pride and an appearance in the final, where Shrimpers now meet Corcalona FC.

This Sunday, Shrimpers switch their attention back to Colchester and District Sunday League division one and an away match at Copford.

Duckpond, meanwhile, take on Wivenhoe Old Boys at Low Road, in the quarter-finals of the Charles Hewitt Memorial Knockout Trophy.
