STEVE Wilmot won a fund-raising pool tournament held at The Royal, in Dovercourt.

All proceeds from the competition went to the cystic fibrosis charity.

Greg Gueizelar organised the event, which will now be held on an annual basis on Grand National day.

Each year, the charity will change, to raise money for causes close to the town’s heart.

Steve McCrae would have been 40 last week and it was fitting that the first of these tournaments was dedicated to his memory and his charity.

On a very well-attended day, the pool itself was of a superb standard throughout and the eventual winner was Wilmot.

His road to victory wasn’t easy, as he had to beat tough opponents in Gueizelar, Bernie Blackburn, Ashley Brundle and Adam Rogers.

Then, in the final, he defeated the favourite, Wayne Wallace, 3-1.

He was presented with the winner’s trophy and crowned champion of 2015.

“It was a great day, which the town came out and supported,” said Gueizelar.

“For Steve to win the first tournament of a new era was perfect really, as he has been behind all the fundraising pool and snooker tournaments this town has run.”

Gueizelar has confirmed that next year’s tournament will be for the CRY charity.
