HARWICH Boxing Club’s Rio Gordon extended his unbeaten record to four in his contest against Lion ABC’s Paddy Mcdonagh.

Mcdonagh edged the opening round, capitalising as his opponent fell short with his jab.

The second saw a more determined Gordon, who applied pressure with his heavy-handed shots scoring well.

As Mcdonagh tired in the last, the 14-year-old took full advantage, closing the bout the more purposeful combatant and his work was rewarded with a split points win.

Twelve-year-old captain Jack Farrow took on Mcdonagh’s brother, Michael, also from Lion ABC.

In a scrappy opener, Mcdonagh forced the pace.

However, Farrow remained composed and picked his shots well.

In the second, Farrow had settled into his rhythm and scored with neat counter-punches.

Now in top gear, Farrow had a good final session, with solid punches.

All three judges went in favour of the Harwich puncher, who took a unanimous points decision.

After a two-year ring absence, senior lightweight Zak Avalon faced Norwich City’s Sam Omara.

Avalon showed plenty of resolve in the face of a hard-punching operator.

After three tough rounds, Avalon dropped the decision but has shook the ring rust off and will box again soon.

It proved a particularly good week for Gordon, who was also honoured through the Jack Petchey Foundation.

Harwich club-mate Jimmy Preston and club helper Bryan Avenell were also recognised for their achievements at the club, at a presentation ceremony in Walton.
