HARWICH and Parkeston are back in the Essex and Suffolk Border League premier division.

The Shrimpers opted to drop into division one last year but have now been told their application to go back up has been successful.

It means the return of what will be two eagerly-anticipated derbies against neighbours Little Oakley.

Chairman Tony Armstrong said the club had no option but to drop down last year, having lost virtually all their squad following the decision not to go up to the Thurlow Nunn League.

And he says the decision has been vindicated.

“We’re much better equipped now,” he said.

“Had we not made the decision we made, it would have cast serious doubts as to whether we could carry on.

“It gave us time to consider our position, without having to make any rash decisions.

“Having a year out of the premier division gave us time to reassess and reconsider whether we can cope at premier division level.

“Only time will tell but we believe we can.

“It was the only real option if we want to survive and progress and we’re going into it with a very positive attitude.”

Harwich and champions Hatfield Peverel have been promoted, replacing Great Bentley – who pulled out midway through last term – and basement boys Boxted.

The Shrimpers have arranged three friendlies, at home to Brantham’s reserves on August 1, at Needham Market’s reserves on August 5 and at home to Wivenhoe reserves on August 8.
