MORE runners are being encouraged to take part in Harwich’s new Parkrun event.

Since its launch on August 1, there have been five Harwich Parkruns so far, featuring 72 different runners covering a total distance of 1,450 kilometres.

Now that the weekly five-kilometre races have become more established, organisers are keen to encourage wider participation.

“Parkruns are not all about the seasoned runners,” said Parkrun organiser Dennis Warner.

“The concept is designed to encourage and support those who just want to get some exercise and enjoy the atmosphere of a Parkrun.

“The aim is to get as many people involved in taking some form of exercise each week.

“The average time of those taking part is a modest 29 minutes and 15 seconds.

“Children are also encouraged to participate, although those under the age of 11 need to be accompanied by an adult.

“It’s also possible to bring even younger infants along in a pushchair and those running with a dog are welcome, if the dog is kept on a short lead during the run.

“We’d like to introduce a system where, on occasions, people involved with a club or organisation invite as many of its members as possible to either run or volunteer at a Parkrun.

“In return they could promote their club or organisation and it could be a sporting club or non-sporting organisation.”
