HARWICH Boxing Club had three members in action on the Colchester ABC show at St Benedict’s Catholic College.

Welterweight Paul Gordon, 19, engaged in a battle royale with Peterborough’s Daniel Meins.

They fought over three gruelling two-minute rounds.

Gordon started at a furious pace, forcing his opponent to cover up, and looked to have taken the first round.

However, he lost his concentration on the bell, shipping a wicked right hook to suffer a standing eight count.

Gordon bounced back in the second round and used his reach and height to good advantage.

The final session saw both boys battle hard, with Gordon’s shots edging him ahead – only for Meins to trap the Harwich boxer on the ropes and deliver another ferocious hook punch to record a second standing eight count.

The judges acknowledged Gordon’s higher work-rate to give him and Harwich their win of the season, with a split points decision.

Earlier in the show, 14-year-old Stevie Martin looked to have done enough in rounds one and three to take the decision against Brentwood’s Mak Fuller.

However, the judges gave the spoils to his opponent, on a split points decision.

Another 14-year-old, Jacob Kelly, continued his ring education as he engagedin a non-decision skills bout with Peterborough’s Edvinas Butkas.

Kelly gave a good account of himself, closing the match-up as the more dominant puncher.
