HARWICH and Dovercourt High School’s year seven rugby team battled their way into a cup final.
First, they won their play-off final against Thurstable 20-0, in a match played at Colchester Rugby Club.
Joe Sewell and Ioan Woodward scored tries to put them in the driving seat, before another try from Woodward.
In the second half, Liam Atkins powered his way over the line, with two players hanging off him, to score his first-ever try.
This meant Harwich were into the final, where they were drawn against Stanway.
Ashworth nearly put them in front – only to be stopped just short of the line.
Stanway then broke the deadlock and added more tries to run out 25-0 winners.
Nevertheless, it was a great first season for the year seven team.
In their first year together, they went unbeaten in the coastal league and won their play-off game to get to the final.
In total, they scored 53 tries and conceded seven.
Player-of-the-day was Joe Sewell.
Meanwhile, Harwich’s year nine team were pipped by Phillip Morant.
Floyd Barker and Zachary Keeley scored tries to give them the lead, but they tired in the latter stages and Phillip Morant snatched a 15-10 victory.
