PROUD coach Martin Webb has reflected on a historic night for Harwich Boxing Club.

The club achieved their first-ever clean sweep of victories - winning eight fights out of eight at last week's home show at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

It was the first time in their history that the club had achieved such a feat and the highlight was a stunning win for Paul Gordon.

The welterweight was voted best home boxer and also involved in the bout of the night, against Maldon's Jack Martin, who is currently ranked number ten in England.

Elsewhere there were victories for Pat Allen Cripps, Stevie Martin, Sean Darvell, Toby Gledhill, Cameron Walker, Killian Hardy and Gavin Hewitt.

"We've had many good nights over the years, but this will take some beating," said a delighted Webb.

"In the 20 years we've been hosting home shows – in the region of 40 - we've come close but never quite achieved a clean sweep and I'm extremely proud of our boxers' achievements, representing the club and town of Harwich.

"The highlight for me was another fantastic win for granite-chinned warrior Paul Gordon.

"He's having a stellar season and wouldn't know the meaning of a dull contest, always committed to taking the fight to his opponent.

"It was a really significant win.

"We're keeping our feet on the ground, as his opponent didn’t have much time to prepare for the contest.

"Nonetheless, gaining the win against a vastly more experienced opponent was an outstanding result."

Webb also had special praise for Hewitt - Harwich's oldest-ever competitive boxer at the age of 34.

With seven wins from seven already secured, the pressure fell on his shoulders to complete the clean sweep.

And the senior light heavyweight did not disappoint, securing a close points win against Norwich Diamonds' A Lindsey.

"At our last show in December, we had won six from six when he entered the ring and duly lost on points," said Webb.

"But Gavin wasn’t going to let history repeat itself, despite being under immense pressure.

"He showed real character and determination to grind out a points win and ensure a historic night for the club.

"We're now going to begin preparations for a tournament in Holland in March, in what's proving a very good season so far for the club."
