MARK Gillett and his Harwich and Dovercourt Golf Club team travelled to Bentley Golf Club for the second round of the Thornton Cup.

Despite the damp, cold weather, the team were in good spirits and looking forward to the match.

However, it became apparent after the morning foursomes that it was going to be a tough day.

This proved the case and, after the singles matches, it was the hosts who ran out comfortable winners.

In Gillett's after-match speech, he congratulated Bentley and wished them all the best in future rounds of the Thornton Cup.

He also thanked his team for the support, commitment and good sportsmanship they had shown throughout this year's competition.

Elsewhere, Harwich's veterans defeated Fynne Valley 7-1.

The club's Ladies' Shield resulted in a triumph for Viv Dales' mixed team over Neil Howells' mixed team.

The Headlam Stableford Trophy was won by the club's most senior vet, Berni Henderson.

At 87, he recorded a magnificent score of 38 points.

Keith Morris was second, with 36, and Rod Richardson third, with 35, on countback from Trevor Hardy.
