TWO-GOAL hero Michael Brothers reflected on a perfect finale as Brantham Athletic capped their season by lifting League Cup silverware.

The Imps, who finished fifth in the Thurlow Nunn League premier division, ended on a high after beating Thetford Town 4-2 on Monday afternoon.

Brothers netted twice and he was joined on the scoresheet by Craig Hughes and Sean Bartlett in a match played at Diss Town’s Brewers Green Lane stadium.

“The players have bought into what we’re trying to do here and it’s great we’ve finished with an unbeaten run of 11 or 12 games,” said joint-manager Brothers, who runs the side with Matt Carmichael.

“It was very hard work but every one of us, including the substitutes, put every ounce of effort into the game.

“They did everything we asked of them.

“It was absolutely brilliant and made up for all that hard work, week in, week out.

“There have been times this season when we’ve lost and wondered what we’ve done wrong.

“But we haven’t done anything differently in the last few weeks and that’s football.

“We said at the start of the season we wanted to finish in the top three but realised early on that was going to be tough, because the top three were too good for this level.

“They’re probably even too good for the level above.

“So in our own way (disregarding the top three) we’ve come second and finished with some silverware - something we promised the chairman at the start of the season.

“As we started going through the rounds in this cup he kept reminding us, so we knew we had to deliver!”

Brantham ended their league campaign with a 3-3 draw at Great Yarmouth Town on Saturday.

They were already assured of a fifth-place finish and Brothers hopes his club can push on in 2018/19.

“We want to get to the next level but we want to do it the same way as (league runners-up) Felixstowe,” he said.

“We want to do it organically, by building something special and having the right foundations in place.”
