EIGHT Harwich boxers were in action at Felixstowe's Brackenbury Sports Centre.

Six of them guested for a Suffolk boxing select team in a match against Tyne, Tees and Wear.

Welterweight prospect Rio Gordon, 17, faced a determined Danny Neil, from Middlesbrough ABC.

Neat boxing at distance by Gordon had him in front all the way through and even when Neil worked on the inside, the Harwich boxer was more than an equal match.

After three three-minute rounds of quality action, Gordon deservedly took a unanimous points decision and a commemorative Suffolk belt prize to boot.

Schoolboy Cameron Walker was first on the bill to record a win for Harwich, with a tidy display of skills against Lennon Burham, of Brandon ABC.

As the contest unfolded, his confidence grew on his way to a clear unanimous points win.

Sam Campbell, 17, scored well to head and body in his contest with Daniel Fairlamb, of Marden ABC.

A solid last round capped a good performance from Campbell, who took yet another clear unanimous points win for Harwich.

Fellow 17-year-old youth boxer Killian Hardy returned to the ring after an injury had kept him out for the last four months and soon picked up where he left off. Although losing the opener to the counter-punching of Shildon ABC's Conner Byrne, Hardy soon shook off the ring rust to find his rhythm and work his way back into contention with sharp shots.

Needing the round, he dug deep and forced Byrne to the ropes to take a close split points win.

On his debut for the club, 18-year-old Peri Johnson acquitted himself well against Scott Robertson, of Walkerfield ABC, before dipping out on a close points decision.

Likewise, schoolboy Peter Foster gave a good account of himself against Alfie Simpson, of Crook Town ABC, before going down on a split decision.

The team match ended a 5-5 draw.

In two supporting contests, elite welterweight Paul Gordon looked to score another win over Reese Wade, of Essex University ABC.

It was a repeat of their Eastern Counties final in March.

Gordon used his superior reach and height to fire in shots from distance to good effect.

In a barnstorming finish, both boxers traded shot for shot in the last ten seconds of the contest to have the audience on their feet in appreciation.

A deserved unanimous points win went the way of the Harwich puncher.

In a junior bout, 16-year-old Leo Baxter struggled at times to contain Charlie Jones, of Colchester ABC.

Jones started all three rounds the stronger and more purposeful.

Nonetheless, Baxter showed plenty of courage and determination to fire back and stay in contention with hard shots.

After three rounds, he secured a unanimous, yet close, points win.

Harwich head coach Martin Webb said: "As we come towards the close of another successful season, it was nice to get nearly all the active boxers in the club action on a show in nearby Felixstowe.

"Rio Gordon yet again shone and this has acted as a perfect warm-up for him before the prestigious Haringey Box Cup in June, when he will be joined by brother Paul and recent national elite finalist Patrick Allen Cripps.

"With six wins from eight on the night, the coaching team are pleased with the results and performances all round."
