Colchester United manager Tony Humes praised his players after they booked their place in the FA Cup third round following a 1-0 win over Peterborough United.

George Moncur struck a dramatic late winner for the U's at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, minutes after goalkeeper Sam Walker had denied Aaron McLean from the spot and Christian Burgess had hit the woodwork for the visitors.

Colchester produced the perfect response to their 6-0 drubbing at the hands of MK Dons, last weekend.

And after seeing the U's book their place in tomorrow night's third-round draw for the first time since 2011, boss Humes was delighted with his side's result.

He said: "It's a great feeling - the players stuck together and worked hard.

"It was an old-fashioned cup-tie, with two teams who are not in the best of form trying to get through.

“It was a very cagey, committed game and we didn’t have control of it at all.

“We didn’t really play as well as we wanted to but we worked our socks off.

“We stuck together and ultimately, that was what got us the victory.

“We thought we were out of the cup when Peterborough got a penalty.

“But the big man (Sam Walker) made an absolutely fantastic save and then they hit the crossbar, which made us think this might be our day.

“George then scored a fantastic goal – he showed the composure to roll the ball into the back of the net.

"He kept a calm head and rolled the ball into the net, which was a fantastic feeling."
