Colchester United have not given up hope of keeping hold of leading goalscorer Freddie Sears in next month’s transfer window.

The U’s striker, who is out of contract at the end of the season, has been offered a new deal to extend his stay at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

But Sears, who has scored 12 times this season, is yet to agree to fresh terms.

That has fuelled speculation that he could quit Colchester in January, with Bristol City reportedly among his suitors.

However, Tony Humes has reiterated that he is happy to give Sears more time to decide whether or not to stay at the club.

And the U’s boss says he is still hopeful that the 25-year-old will agree to stay put, despite speculation linking him with a move away from north Essex.

Humes said: “We haven’t given up hope of keeping Freddie here.

“He’s playing week in, week out for us and he’s enjoying his football.”
