Tony Humes was delighted with the performance of his Colchester United team after they toppled League One leaders Bristol City this afternoon.

The U's won 3-2 to see off the Robins and move out of the bottom four for the first time since last November.

First-half goals from Tom Lapslie, Macauley Bonne and Chris Porter put Colchester 3-0 up inside the opening half hour.

And although James Tavernier and Aden Flint pulled goals back for Bristol City in the second half, the U's stood firm to claim a precious three points.

U's boss Humes said: “We were delighted with the first-half performance with the way we asked them to be brave and in the second half, we stood up to the unbelievable barrage that Bristol City threw at us.

“You want players who are going to be brave and play in the top half of the pitch and create opportunities.

“The lads were terrific and for Tom Lapslie and Macauley Bonne to score, it shows what we’re doing is right with the youth here – they made a big impact.

“All of the players were superb and they really stood up to it, particularly after that second goal went in.

“We just have to feed off that for the rest of the season and say “we can do it”.

“We scored three really good goals and I was really pleased with the way we played.

“We urged the players to be brave and get on the ball and pass it more than perhaps we have done over recent games and they got their just rewards."
