Chesterfield boss Paul Cook was modest in his appraisal of his side’s huge victory over Colchester United.

The Spireites were in irresistible form at the Proact Stadium, thrashing the U’s 6-0 to close in on a League One play-off spot.

Two goals apiece for Gary Roberts and Sam Clucas plus further goals from Dan Gardner and Jimmy Ryan condemned Colchester to a heavy defeat.

But Cook had words of comfort for the U’s, for whom the defeat was a blow to their chances of avoiding relegation.

Cook said: “It was a very disappointing night for Colchester and we respect every team in the league.

“Our players deserve great credit because some of our football was fantastic and the energy levels were high.

“Tommy Lee had to make a couple of good saves at 0-0 and they were very important.

“We scored goals at good times and our confidence levels were high.

“We went on to win the game well but we certainly wish Colchester well for the rest of the season.

“We’re a good side and I think that’s common knowledge, after a period of time.

“It doesn’t mean that you’re successful or you win anything.

“But we’ve got good players and football is about playing.

“The managers who do well seem to have the best players and we’re lucky.

“There’s a long way to go - other teams can still catch us and there’s nothing that is organised yet.

“If we keep the momentum going, we’ll have done our best.”
