Colchester United are hoping to persuade David Fox to stay at the club for next season.

The experienced midfielder is now a free agent, after his short-term deal with the U's expired earlier this week.

Fox made a big impact for Colchester this season, after joining them for a second spell last October.

The 31-year-old midfielder made 33 appearances for the U's and skippered them in the absence of long-term injury victim, Magnus Okuonghae.

Colchester boss Tony Humes said: “David’s contract ended on Monday so discussions are going on with him.

“We’re talking to him about what we can do and agree a deal that suits both parties.

“I thought he was terrific when he came in.

“We’ve asked him to take the responsibility to be captain and I thought he did it really well.

“He rose to it and in the last four games when he came back into the team, I thought he was tremendous."

Meanwhile, boss Humes has also confirmed that the club are in "on-going discussions" with Okuonghae and Sanchez Watt, who are both out of contract this summer.
