Richard Brindley has revealed that the prospect of playing regular football was the main reason behind his decision to join Colchester United.

The right-back has joined the U’s on a two-year deal, having impressed on loan for them at the end of last season.

Brindley made eight appearances for Colchester in the final weeks of the League One campaign, helping them to avoid relegation.

And following his release by Championship side Rotherham United last month, he has now made a permanent switch to the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Brindley found himself out of favour with the Millers last season, making just four appearances for the Championship club.

And after linking up with the U’s on a free transfer, the attacking full-back says he is looking forward to the prospect of playing plenty of games.

He told the Daily Gazette: “I spoke to the manager soon after the last game of the season and it was clear that he enjoyed my time there.

“I had other options in League One and the Championship but moving to Colchester felt right.

“I can see many positives but playing regularly is the main thing and I’m looking for regular football.

“Over the last two years, my only issue has been my lack of games.

“With the opportunity to get a full season under my belt at Colchester next season, I feel I can become a much better player.”

Brindley says he is looking forward to working under U’s boss Tony Humes again, having fallen out of favour with Rotherham manager Steve Evans.

“When I was on loan at Colchester having a manager that believes in me was all I needed,” said former Chelmsford City full-back Brindley.

“He was willing to give me an opportunity to show my talent.

“Steve Evans was aware of my talent but he wasn’t willing to give me a chance at all.

“I’m looking forward to working with the manager again.

“He’s a really good man manager who works very well with youngsters.

“We spoke about his plans for Colchester and what he wants to do.

“He’s looking to strengthen and we’ll wait and see who comes in and he’ll be bringing in more of his own players.

“I think that with the team we have and the possibility of one or two more additions, we can be a strong team next season.”
