George Elokobi has revealed that he came close to joining Colchester United last summer.

Former U’s boss Joe Dunne was keen on signing him, prior to the powerful defender joining League One rivals Oldham Athletic.

Elokobi went on to make 27 appearances for the Latics, before rejecting the chance to stay after being offered reduced terms at Boundary Park.

The 29-year-old returned to the U's on a free transfer last week, signing a two-year deal.

Elokobi said: “I was close to coming back last year with Joe Dunne.

“But I’d already agreed with Oldham and I’m a man of my word - that’s something to stick to, no matter what.

“But it was only a matter of time before seeing what would happen in the summer and I finished at Oldham.

“Colchester had done their homework - they showed interest in me and that made things a lot easier.

“The gaffer (Tony Humes) outlined his points and told me the club’s plans for going forward.

“Both he and the chairman are passionate about the club and desperate for them to do well.”
