Tom Lapslie bagged the winner as Colchester United’s under-21s secured their first win of the new Professional Development League Two season.
Lapslie’s low finish just after the half hour proved enough to secure the U’s victory against the Blues, at Florence Park.
Defender George Elokobi completed the full 90 minutes for Colchester, as he continues his return to fitness.
Colchester went ahead after 17 minutes through Louis Dunne, who side-footed home from Dion Sembie-Ferris’s cross.
But Birmingham were back on level terms eight minutes later when Liam Truslove headed home an equaliser.
However, midfielder Lapslie restored Colchester’s lead soon after to give the U’s a half-time advantage.
And that was the way it stayed in the second half, as John McGreal and David Wright’s side chalked up a first victory of the campaign.
