Joe Edwards is confident that Colchester United’s first win of the season is just around the corner.

And the U’s central midfielder believes they will can go on a winning streak, once they chalk up their first three-point haul.

Colchester are preparing for their trip to Fleetwood Town this weekend, on the back of a goal-less draw with Oldham Athletic on Tuesday night.

And Edwards, who joined the U’s on a free transfer from Yeovil Town earlier this summer, is optimistic that their first victory is not far away.

Edwards said: “The first win for us is massive and there’s no reason why it can’t be on Saturday.

“I think we’re close to it and we’ve had some positive performances.

“The clean sheet was massive (against Oldham) and we’re not short of creating chances.

“If we can take that into Saturday and nick a scrappy 1-0, then everyone will be happy.

“We’re still very confident in the changing room and the boys are very upbeat about how we’ve played.

“We’ve had a little bit of bad luck and a few decisions haven’t gone our way in previous games.

“But we have a lot of quality in our side and I can see us going on a little winning streak.

“The first few games are definitely something to build on and although we haven’t got a win yet, it’s been a really positive start.

“There’s been some good performances in all of the games - the boys are really positive and we’re looking up.

“The fans have been great - they know that it’s going to be a long, hard season.

“But if we keep playing the way we have been and stay positive, then there’s no reason why we can’t go on a good run.”

Edwards says he has been impressed by the quality of Colchester’s youngsters since arriving at the club, in July.

The 24-year-old has special praise for full-back Kane Vincent-Young, who made his first-ever Football League start for the U’s against Oldham.

“Kane has come in and done really well,” added former Bristol City trainee Edwards.

“He’s an unbelievable defender and is probably one of the hardest to get past in training.

“He’s taken his chance and I thought he did well (against Oldham).”
