Owen Garvan’s fine form for Colchester United will help those around him become better players.

That is the view of U’s boss Tony Humes, who has heaped praise on the midfielder for his impressive recent performances.

Garvan was once again outstanding in helping Colchester beat Bradford City 2-0 and register a fourth successive victory.

The 27-year-old agreed a deal with the U’s last week which will keep him at the Weston Homes Community Stadium until the summer of 2017.

Garvan has caught the eye in the six league games he has played since arriving on a free transfer last month and has helped the U’s stay unbeaten in that time.

Humes said: “Owen’s been terrific.

“He can dictate things, with his quality of pass and he sees things that other players don’t see.

“He’s only going to make players around him better players.

“He needs the likes of Alex Gilbey, Joe Edwards and George Moncur in there to play with him.

“They’re only going to get better through playing with him.”

Owen provided a superb pass for Marvin Sordell to score Colchester’s second goal against the Bantams.

“It was a bit of guile and a bit of surprise from Owen and he’s a good footballer,” added Humes.

“Everybody thought that he was going to shoot but he sees things that other people can’t see.

“Marvin was reading it and knew what was going on and he could tell from his body shape where he was going to go to.

“Marvin’s first touch and finish was equally as good.”
