Nicky Shorey has declared himself fit and raring to go - if called upon in today's League One clash at Scunthorpe United.

The former England left-back joined Colchester United this week, agreeing a deal until the end of the season after becoming a free agent following a stint in the Indian Super League.

He has not played a game since early December.

However, the 34-year-old has been keeping himself fit and could come into the equation at Glanford Park.

“Obviously I haven’t played a game in a while,” said Shorey, who made nearly 300 appearances for Reading and also played for the likes of Aston Villa, West Brom and Portsmouth.

“My last game was December 5.

“But I’ve been training the whole time and keeping myself ticking over.

“The intensity of training has been very good here, too, so you never know.”

Colchester are desperate for points to boost their quest for survival.

They are third from bottom and five points from safety.

Nevertheless, Shorey said: “We all know it’s going to be tough but feel we’ve got enough to get out of trouble.

“The boys are confident.

“I’ve been very encouraged by the lads in training and watched the last two games. There are lots of positives.

“It’s been really good and I’ve seen the quality the lads have got.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it and the mood is good.

“If you keep putting in good performances, most of the time results will follow.”
