Colchester United attacker Gavin Massey is hoping his impressive performance against Spurs will be the catalyst for a strong finish to the season.

Massey shone in the U's 4-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup fourth round, last Saturday.

The former Watford youngster had a big hand in Colchester’s late consolation when his shot hit a post and went in off Spurs defender Ben Davies.

He was named the home side’s man of the match after an impressive display and was picked out for special praise by pundit Jermaine Jenas on Match of the Day.

Massey said: “I’ve been disappointed with myself personally of late, performance-wise.

“I haven’t scored nearly enough goals like I did last season.

“I needed to build my confidence up against a big side and it gave me a good opportunity to get on the ball and show my stuff a bit.

“I need to take that in personally for the last 18 games because we have a massive ask and we’re going to need everyone at the top of their game.

“I think I’ve fallen short of that this season and I’m going to have to be at the top of my game for the last 18 games to help the club try and stay in the league and push on from there.

“We can’t be too downhearted – it was 4-1 in the end but I think we could be happy with our performance.

“We have to take positives where we can and we’ve created problems for a big team like Spurs in certain parts of the game.”
