Colchester United have been approached by National League side Lincoln City to sign Macauley Bonne on loan.

The U's are mulling over the offer from Danny Cowley's Imps for their 20-year-old striker, who has made four appearances for the League Two side so far this season.

Even though the transfer window is now closed for Premier League and Football League clubs, non-league clubs are still permitted to sign players.

And Colchester are now considering Lincoln's offer for Zimbabwe international Bonne, who started the U's Checkatrade Trophy defeat at Crawley Town on Tuesday night.

U's head coach John McGreal said: "It's still ongoing so we'll have to make a decision on that.

"We'll make a decision but Macauley needs games in his preferred position.

"If you look at it the other night at Crawley, he can play in the ten role and in the wide areas but when Macauley is most effective is when he's running at defenders as a number nine.

"Lincoln are looking for a body having lost someone and they've had a great start to the season as well.

"It's a great club and a big club so we'll just have to see how that develops."

Bonne, who made his senior debut in October 2013, has made 66 first-team appearances for Colchester, scoring 13 times.

However, he is yet to start a league game for the U's so far this season.
