Colchester United’s new signing Rekeil Pyke says he wants to be a part of a winning team after joining the club this week.

Pyke will be hoping to make his U’s debut at Blackpool tomorrow, after arriving on loan from Championship side Huddersfield Town until the end of the season.

The 19-year-old striker had spent time training with Colchester prior to his loan switch to the Weston Homes Community Stadium, where he will be hoping to add to his experience in senior football.

Pyke, who has been prolific for Huddersfield’s academy sides, has linked up with a side that has lost only one of their last ten games in League Two and pushing for the play-offs and beyond.

Pyke told the U's website: “I’ve heard that Colchester have been doing well, so I want to be a part of a winning team.

“I’m really excited about getting started in the games.

“I’ve played here (Florence Park) a few times for the under-18 and under-21 teams at Huddersfield, so I knew what to expect really.

“The Academy manager at Huddersfield, Steve (Weaver) said Colchester want to take you down for a few days training so I came down last week and impressed, so they signed me.

“That brought a bit of extra pressure, knowing that I had come down with a view to a loan spell and looking to impress.

“But I wanted to impress anyway and that’s all I was focusing on really.

“The manager wants me to work hard and look sharp in training and when you get your chance, try to score some goals and perform well.”

Pyke is yet to make an appearance for Huddersfield’s first team, where he is regarded as a hot prospect.

However, he spent time on loan at National League side Wrexham earlier this season.

The young forward, who first joined Huddersfield at under-12 level from local side Rothwell Juniors, made three appearances for the Welsh club.

“I’ve been out on loan at Wrexham and you meet new people, so that will help me know what to expect coming out on loan again,” he said.

“The people here have made me feel welcome and stuff like that so I’m enjoying it and I can’t wait to get involved in the games.”

Pyke will challenge Chris Porter, Kurtis Guthrie and Denny Johnstone for a place in Colchester’s starting line-up, in their final 19 league games of the League Two campaign.

He added: “I’m more of a number nine, because I like to stay central and win headers and also get down the sides.”
