Just like their incredibly determined supporter Tommy Leggett, this spirited Colchester United squad look like they are willing to go the extra mile for the cause, this season.

Tommy led by example before the U’s game at Cambridge United, running 45 miles from Colchester to the Abbey Stadium to raise funds for treatment for his two-year son Alfie, who has Norrie disease.

Tommy’s favourite team showed similar courage on the pitch, battling away until the end to salvage a point at the Abbey Stadium thanks to Sammie Szmodics’ late equaliser, despite their extensive injury problems.

Such character certainly bodes well for the remainder of the season.

Colchester currently have more than a dozen first-team players out.

But they were still able to earn a draw and stay in touch with not only the League Two play-off positions but also the automatic promotion places.

It would without doubt be an amazing achievement if the U’s were to go up, such as been the number of key players they have lost over recent weeks.

Colchester have robbed of the services of the likes of Kurtis Guthrie, Craig Slater and Tom Eastman, yet they are still churning out results.

Significantly, seven of Colchester’s remaining 11 games are at the Weston Homes Community Stadium – and their next two home fixtures are particularly pivotal.

This weekend, they host fifth-placed Portsmouth, who are now only five points above them in the table following their home defeat against Crewe Alexandra.

And three days later, Mansfield Town, who currently lie one point and one place above the U’s, come to the Community Stadium.

Even with their injury problems taken into account, who would back against John McGreal’s side getting six points out of six, given their home record this season?

Indeed, Colchester are currently League Two’s form team on home soil.

By the end of the game at Cambridge, half of the U’s side was made up of academy products.

It will be their youthful exuberance, coupled with the experience of the spine of the team that will be crucial in determining whether or not the spirited U’s can emulate Tommy by making strides and achieving something special against all the odds, this season.

If it does happen, how sweet that success will taste.
