Colchester United fell to a 2-1 defeat at Notts County on Saturday afternoon after conceding a stoppage-time goal.
Ryan Yates' injury-time header ended the U's six-game unbeaten league run at Meadow Lane, after substitute Sanmi Odelusi had cancelled out Shola Ameobi's penalty.
Mikael Mandron had earlier seen a penalty saved by County keeper Ross Fitzsimons, as John McGreal's side lost on the road for the first time since September.
The result sees Colchester three points off the play-off places in the League Two table, heading to a two-week break before hosting Exeter City on December 9.
Here, Colchester United reporter Jonathan Waldron rates the players after a good performance went unrewarded.

SAM WALKER 7

Denied Dickinson prior but had little chance with Notts County’s goals after that.

TOM EASTMAN 7

Made some key interceptions and blocks for the U’s particularly in the first half.

RYAN INNISS 7

In-form defender produced another big performance in central defence for the U’s.

FRANKIE KENT 7

Relished his battle with the experienced Ameobi and made some key blocks.

RYAN JACKSON 8

U’s man of the match. Won a penalty for his side and hardly put a foot wrong.

BRANDON COMLEY 6

Was efficient in possession and competed well in midfield especially in the first half.

TOM LAPSLIE 7

U’s skipper was typically committed; made some cracking tackles particularly in the first half.

KANE VINCENT-YOUNG 6

Worked hard on the left flank but had limited opportunities to get forward.

DREY WRIGHT 7

Was outstanding in the opening half hour before the hosts’ restricted his influence.

SAMMIE SZMODICS 6

U’s leading scorer had a relatively quiet game by his high standards against a good County defence.

MIKAEL MANDRON 5

Conceded and then missed a penalty and was at fault for County winner but provided assist for Odelusi’s goal.

SUBSTITUTES

SANMI ODELUSI (for Lapslie, 86)

Took his first-ever U’s goal very well just minutes after coming off the bench.

KYLE REID (for Vincent-Young, 88)

Had little time to make an impact for Colchester in an eventful final few minutes.

LEWIS KINSELLA (for Wright, 90)

Tried to help the U’s see out the game but could not prevent the hosts scoring a winner.

SUBSTITUTES (NOT USED): James, Slater, Hanlan, Gilmartin.
