At the end of a pretty eventful week for Colchester United, it was perhaps fitting that they should finish it by enjoying arguably their best win of the season, so far.

The U’s 2-1 triumph over Luton Town on Good Friday was a welcome return to form for John McGreal’s side at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, where they had suffered back-to-back defeats in their previous two home games.

It was an impressive victory for Colchester, for whom much of the talk before the game had centred around off-the-field matters.

U’s chairman Robbie Cowling had pledged at the club’s fans’ forum to ban any Colchester supporters who cross the line with personal abuse in future, following unrest in the away end during the club’s 1-0 win at Stevenage.

And it was also confirmed that Weston Homes’ ten-year sponsorship deal at the Community Stadium would end at the conclusion of the current campaign.

Add to that Kurtis Guthrie’s departure from the U’s after his contract was cancelled by mutual consent and it was not exactly a quiet week in the life of Colchester United leading up to the Hatters game, which was eventful in itself given the unfortunate Luke Berry’s nasty ankle injury and the final outcome.

The U’s win served to further deflect attention away from Guthrie’s exit, which was not the greatest surprise in the world given the volatile nature of what proved to be his final appearance in a Colchester shirt, which came against Yeovil Town.

After a squabble over who should take a penalty, the striker was later barracked by some U’s fans before disappearing straight down the tunnel after being substituted in the second half of the 1-0 home defeat to the Glovers.

It is a pity it ended like that; he may not have been everyone’s cup of tea but Guthrie did score 12 goals in his first season for Colchester.

It should not be forgotten that he was one of the first names on McGreal’s teamsheet, prior to suffering an ankle injury which kept him out for the best part of ten months, aside from a short-lived return in September.

After a long time on the sidelines, the 24-year-old sadly failed to recapture the kind of form he demonstrated last season.

Colchester tomorrow begin a brand new month of action looking to keep their slim play-off hopes alive at Forest Green Rovers, from whom they signed Guthrie in the summer of 2016.

That now seems like a long time ago and it is perhaps now best for both parties that they both move on.
