John McGreal is set to make changes to his Colchester United starting line-up for their final home game of the League Two campaign.

The U’s play host to Swindon Town at the Weston Homes Community Stadium this afternoon, knowing that a play-off spot is now out of their reach with two games remaining.

Colchester will be looking to avoid suffering four straight league defeats, something they have not experienced since December 2015.

And McGreal says he could give one or two of the club’s under-23 players to shine, with the likes of Ryan Gondoh and Tariq Issa waiting in the wings.

McGreal said: “I’ll probably look to try and change one or two things around, because I’ll be looking at what we’ve got and what we might be needing, come the pre-season and next season.

“It’s an ideal opportunity to put in a fresh face.

“Ryan Gondoh has come to mind but we’ll have to wait and see.

“We want to win a game of football – it’s not like we’re going to make wholesale changes but it’s one where we might think someone might deserve an opportunity from the under-23s.

“It’s no different to what we’ve done throughout the season with the likes of Courtney Senior but with us being out of the play-off race, it might just give us the opportunity to give someone else a chance.

“It’s a decision that I’m still playing around with, at this moment in time.”

McGreal insists there will be plenty at stake for both teams this weekend, despite their failure to clinch a top-seven finish.

McGreal added: “We haven’t been able to get into the play-offs so what then is the next best possible target? That is a top-ten finish.

“We’ll be looking to continue the application that we’ve shown throughout the season.

“We’ll try and put on a good show for our fans, who have come in their numbers this season and shown good support.

“Swindon are a big club in this division and it’ll be good to pit our wits against Phil, who’s an experienced manager.

“I’ve got to know Phil (Brown) over the years and I know that he’ll be coming to win a game of football.

“Swindon can’t make the play-offs so it’s one where he might try one or two things but I’m sure he’ll be looking to win it for the away fans.

“It’s a big three points at stake on Saturday, for both teams.”

Colchester can still secure a top-ten finish in League Two this season but will fall short of their eighth-place finish, of the previous campaign.

Nevertheless, boss McGreal says he is proud of his players’ efforts.

McGreal added: “We haven’t got ourselves into the play-offs but I’m really pleased and proud with some of the boys’ performances and team performances, this year.

“I think they’ve been exceptional at times, it’s just that we haven’t been able to put games to bed which we have to improve on in the summer.

“We haven’t quite made it this season but it’s not been for the lack of trying. Some of the football we’ve played has been exceptional this season.”

Tom Lapslie could return for the U’s after missing their last four games with a hamstring injury but Brennan Dickenson is still out.
