Colchester United were beaten 1-0 by Exeter City, on Saturday afternoon.

Robbie Simpson's header with 18 minutes remaining gave the Grecians all three points at St James Park, in the U's final game of the League Two season.

Sammie Szmodics had earlier in the half had a penalty saved by Exeter keeper Christy Pym, the fourth spot-kick the U's squandered this season.

The result means Colchester have finished 13th in the League Two table.

Here, Colchester United reporter Jonathan Waldron rates the players in the disappointing 1-0 loss:

DILLON BARNES 6

Made a decent save to deny Harley in the first half but might have done better with Exeter’s winner.

RYAN JACKSON 6

A solid enough performance at right-back and got some decent crosses in.

FRANKIE KENT 5

Will be disappointed with the manner of Exeter’s goal and looked shaky early on.

LUKE PROSSER 7

U’s man of the match. Made a goal-saving challenge and almost scored late on.

KANE VINCENT-YOUNG 6

Maintained his consistent form with another good display at left-back.

RYAN GONDOH 7

Was always trying to make things happen on his first-ever start for the U’s.

BRANDON COMLEY 6

Was neat and tidy in possession but did not really hurt the Exeter defence.

SEAN MURRAY 6

Worked hard as always in midfield before being replaced with 14 minutes to go.

COURTNEY SENIOR 5

Had some good moments especially at half-time before being taken off in the second half.

SAMMIE SZMODICS 5

Was left to rue a second-half penalty miss before going close soon after.

MIKAEL MANDRON 5

Had little joy against a solid Exeter defence before going off at half-time.
