Harwich and Dovercourt skipper Francis wants more from his younger players

HARWICH & Dovercourt captain Joe Francis wants more from his younger players.
The Wick Lane side fell to a 22-13 defeat in their opening game of their Eastern Counties division one campaign at Mersea Island.
They will look to bounce back when they entertain Swaffham today but will be without George Brunning and Jack Cairns, who look to be sidelined up until Christmas with a shoulder and hand injury.
Francis said: “We lost it around the loose fringes, some younger players were given the opportunity to stake their claim on their first team shirt and they just didn’t take it.
“We want to promote the youth but they have got to be hungry for the jersey.
“If we are going to support the youngsters they have got to man up and fight for their place in the team and I really hope they do.”
Looking ahead to today’s match, Francis said: “We look stronger going into this game with an older, more experienced, team and see a return to the team for Ed Mayhew, Simon Palmer and Clark Simpson, who are all in their 30s.
“Adrian Dalby also ensured he makes the starting line-up, leaving the first team short on youth.
“Swaffham will be slow and will attack our fringes.
“If we can learn from our mistakes against Mersea and control the breakdown area we will dominate.
“Swaffham will hit us hard early doors, for us to succeed we need to be passionate, focused and determined from before the kick-off.
“They will put us under pressure in the first 20, if we keep our discipline, and remain calm we will open them up in second half.”
Mistley will be looking to continue their unbeaten start to their division two campaign, after a 20-20 draw against Norwich Medics.
They go to Haverhill today
