Harwich and Manningtree Standard: Derby likely to be a swansong for Matt Derby likely to be a swansong for Matt

MATT Carmichael could have taken charge of his last game as Harwich and Parkeston manager.

Personal commitments mean the Shrimpers boss is unavailable for tomorrow’s Kent Blaxill Essex and Suffolk Border League finale, at West Bergholt.

And with it still unlikely the club will take promotion up to the Thurlow Nunn League, Carmichael viewed Tuesday’s 3-0 victory against neighbours Little Oakley as his “swansong” in the Royal Oak dug-out.

“It was probably my last game,” said the former striker, who was given a round of applause by his players.

“I’m still in limbo, because we’re still not entirely sure what’s going to happen.

“But right now, it seems less likely than likely so I considered it my farewell.

“It’s been a good season personally and for the club, but I couldn’t offer the same commitment at this level again next year.

“My heart wouldn’t be in it and that wouldn’t be fair on anyone.

“If I’m not enjoying it, there wouldn’t be any point.

“I’m proud of what I achieved in four years, though.

“We went a long way, from nearly being relegated in my first season to nearly winning the championship twice in the last couple.

“We’ve won two cups, brought through young players who have gone on to progress and I’ve had a core of players who have stayed with me throughout.

“We’ve been a good unit for three years and I feel I’m definitely walking away with the club in a better position playing-wise than when I took over.

“My record stands up fairly well against other managers at this level and I’ll always look back on my time here and be proud of what I’ve achieved.

“I’ve really enjoyed it and worked with some great people, who I can’t speak highly enough of.”

Carmichael had previously stated that he would leave if the club opted not to take promotion this season.
