WHITE NOTLEY 3

HARWICH AND PARKESTON 3

Essex and Suffolk Border League Knock Cup first round

(AET, Harwich won 4-1 on penalties)

JUBILANT Harwich progressed on penalties, following a see-saw match.

They were indebted to goalkeeper Nick Goodwin in the 30th minute, when he pulled off a fine save with a home attacker clean through.

The Shrimpers then took the lead in the 42nd minute.

Tom Farthing headed on for Craig Martin to put Darren Bethell through and he finished clinically.

White Notley pressed in the early stages of the second half and Fillip Kottas equalised from close range in the 50th minute.

Two minutes later, Harwich regained their lead when Bethell’s free-kick was slotted in at the far post by Jake Neale.

However, White Notley were on terms again on the hour, through Rob Beckwith-Addison.

The strong wind was making things difficult, but the teams were giving maximum effort and providing an end-to-end game.

Bethell and substitute Robbie Marks had chances for Harwich before Reece Codd broke through to put White Notley in front for the first time.

With time running out, it looked likely to be the winning goal.

However, Harwich refused to be beaten.

Richard Gamble put Marks through and he took the match into extra-time with a neat finish.

The extra half-hour produced chances but no goals so penalties were needed.

Ashley Wood put Harwich in front.

White Notley missed, Dick Trayner converted for the Shrimpers and Goodwin saved to put them 2-0 up.

Vlad Murrison made it three and although White Notley scored, Bethell completed four excellent spot-kicks to put a delighted Harwich through.

Harwich travel to meet Gas Recreation in the Border League premier division on Saturday, while the veterans entertain Marks Tey at the Royal Oak.
