BRANTHAM Athletic boss Paul Skingley praised his players for a much-improved performance in Saturday’s FA Vase victory against Brimsdown.

The Imps boss had been critical of his team following their 2-0 defeat at FC Clacton, the previous Tuesday.

He described it as a “waste of an evening” because he was so disappointed with his side’s display. However, he had far more to be positive about last weekend as the Imps exerted their authority in the second half, after the first finished 1-1.

Ollie Mann netted twice and he was joined on the scoresheet by Sean Bartlett and Sean Gunn.

“Brimsdown were a decent side,” said Skingley.

“We went behind but then responded with a goal before half-time.

“They scored again early in the second half, but after getting our second there only looked like being one winner.

“We got stronger as the game went on and had other chances to win more comfortably.

“Overall, we played some decent football at times.”

Brantham’s reward is a home tie against fellow Thurlow Nunn League side Kirkley and Pakefield in the first-round proper, on October 31.

“It’ll be another tough game and we’ll have to up our levels,” said Skingley.

“Kirkley will probably finish in the top six, in my opinion, so we know how difficult it’ll be.

“In some ways I like playing different teams and going to different grounds, in these national competitions.

“But the draw is what it is and we’ll look forward to playing Kirkley.”

Saturday’s match was switched to Brantham because Brimsdown, who had been drawn at home, ground-share with Enfield Town and their landlords were at home to Leatherhead.

Brantham now switch their attention to two tough away games.

They visit Walsham-le-Willows tomorrow and then Stanway Rovers next Tuesday, in the League Cup.

“Walsham have picked up a bit and we’ll have to be at our best,” said Skingley.

“But from our point of view, it’s all about finding a level of consistency.

“If we play to our potential, we’ve got a chance in every game.

“If we don’t, we’ll come unstuck – as we saw against Clacton.”
