MISTLEY Rugby Club made it back-to-back wins following a dramatic success.

After beating Hadleigh 12-11 in an Eastern Counties League division two south fixture the previous week, they managed to win 11-10 at Ipswich YM on Saturday.

Matt Course, back from injury, made a welcome return, as did Nick Graves.

Mistley started well, with a penalty from Course putting them 3-0 ahead.

However, Ipswich played very positively and were out to win the game, forcing the visitors to spend most of the first half in their 22.

However, superb defensive work from Isaac Tamani, Edward Barrie and Chris Chown, who had an outstanding game at full-back, kept Ipswich at bay as the first half ended 3-0.

Mistley moved up a gear in the second half.

Dicky Johnson intercepted the ball and scored his second try in two games, increasing the lead to 8-0.

The conversion was missed but Ipswich quickly responded with a try against the run of play to reduce the deficit to 8-5.

They then missed the conversion.

Matt Macgregor, also back from injury, played exceptionally well but disaster struck when he suffered a shoulder injury.

He is unlikely to play for the rest of the season.

A successful penalty conversion from Course increased the lead to 11-5.

However, in the dying minutes of the game, Ipswich scored but failed to convert and the final score was 11-10.

Chris Chown was named man-of-the-match.

Mistley director of rugby Stephen Betts said the two wins, regardless of the margin, had increased confidence in the side ten-fold.

Mistley Marauders, playing at home, were not so lucky against Woodbridge’s second team and suffered a 59-10 defeat.

However, there were two excellent tries from Moby Turner and the Marauders fought with great passion, in particular Lewis Symes, Charlie Barrett, Simon Carter, Stuart Baynes, John Phillips and Jason Cooledge.

Young Jess Fearn, the son of former player Dan Fearn, also played with great gusto at full-back and has a very promising future ahead of him.

Jack Tompkins tackled and kicked exceptionally well.

After a first half that finished 43-10, the Marauders played very well in the second period and the final score was 59-10.

Tomorrow, Mistley’s first team are at home to Felixstowe (kick-off 2pm).

The Marauders return to action against Colchester’s fifth team in a rearranged fixture the following Saturday.
